glass vs plastic baby bottles

Glass vs plastic baby bottles

December 18, 2018

It's a really interesting question to think about glass vs plastic baby bottles and it's one that parents a few small decades ago didn't have to consider as there were only glass bottles. Ah wasn’t life simpler back then? But, we didn’t have high speed internet, cures for all sorts of nasty things, social networking… so, you know, swings and roundabouts.

We found it really interesting to research and think about what the best baby bottles are? I mean, we already have a pretty firm opinion on this being lovers of the environment and nature and always aiming to reduce waste. But we felt as though we really needed to prove that our gut feeling was valid. And here’s what we found…

In our opinion at Organic Baby Food Shop, glass bottles with a silicon sleeve are the best choice for parents right now.

Why?

Good question.

We have been following the dangers of plastic baby bottles and when you see what we discovered, coupled with the benefits of reducing plastic waste, we wonder if we can convince you too.

In 2012, the FDA banned the use of bisphenol A in the manufacture of baby bottles and sippy cups. What's that? It's a chemical. It's a pretty mean and nasty chemical That was thought could lead to certain cancers, changes in the brain and reproductive system, and early puberty. Eeks! Doesn't sound good right?

And that is only six years ago. Six years ago we could have been feeding our precious miracle with a potential carcinogenic. It's pretty terrifying to consider. Sure they're unbreakable, they're lightweight, they're convenient to use, but do these advantages outweigh the benefits of glass baby bottles?

We'll if you're set on sticking to plastic baby bottles and you're using a hand me down bottle we strongly encourage you to check the recycling symbol on the bottom. The symbol #7 or the label PC (which stands for polycarbonate) is a sign that the bottle likely contains BPA. Bottles with the symbol #1, #2, or #4 are made of polyethylene, and #5 bottles are made of polypropylene. Both kinds of bottle can be used safely since neither type contains BPA. You can read more about plastic baby bottles here.

By now maybe you're really thinking about glass or plastic baby bottles. And it could be, perhaps, maybe, potentially... that your are considering glass? Ok for sure, a glass bottle is heavier. And yes, dropping it in the middle of the night on a tile floor is a major danger clean up job.  But there are companies now that sell silicon sleeves to cover them. Check out:

For a few lovely colors and sizes. The textures are ready interesting for your baby too and they'll enjoy feeling the softness of the silicon.

The benefit of glass baby bottles is simple and important. They don't contain any chemicals that can get into your baby's formula.  And that's an essential point that converted us to glass. We're always looking for the most natural, gentle, non-damaging alternatives for our children.

We hope this article has helped you to make an informed decision and most of all we wish you and your baby the sweetest, juiciest yummiest feeding cuddles in the world.
