Soy based baby formula

Are soy based formulas safe?

December 12, 2018

Soy milk is a natural, healthy, a great alternative to milk right? Well, we are sorry to break it to you, but in our opinion and the opinion of health professionals around the world, when it comes to your baby, soy is not a great alternative and you shouldn’t head for a soy based formula. We understand that many parents are looking for a dairy free baby formula or a vegan baby formula but medical professionals agree that baby formula should be milk based or as close to milk as possible for the optimum development of the health, brain and body of your precious baby.

But why not? You ask shaking your head in confusion and thinking, is soy formula good for babies? Why is soy formula bad? And hey, you’re not the only one. Apparently 25% of American babies are fed soy baby formula. So how can so many people be getting it wrong? Well, let’s have a look at the scientific facts and research.

Recently there was an NIEHS funded study “A longitudinal study of estrogen-responsive tissues and hormone concentrations in infants fed soy formula,” and it found cause for further research and conclusions as a matter of urgency. The concerns raised were that Soy formula contains high concentrations of plant-based estrogen-like compounds”. What does that mean? It means that soy formulas contain a compound that is like estrogen, and it’s present in a high level. It can change the body’s normal hormonal development.

The study found more impact of soy in girls. Vaginal cell MI was higher and uterine volume decreased more slowly. What does that mean? Well the long term consequences aren’t yet known. It needs further study. But certainly, anything that has the potential to change the estrogen level and hormonal development of your baby has to be approached with great caution and conviction.

Trypsin Inhibitors... what’s this? Yes it may sound like a bad word or a terrible night out from the psychedelic 70s, but it is actually a protein found in large amounts in soy and is bad for digestion and the absorption of nutrients. In a crucial time of growth for your baby you want them to have all the nutrients possible. Not for their absorption to be prevented.

Phytic Acid... ok, yes, it does sound like it may be another bad word. And it is! This is an organic acid found in soy that makes the digestive tract irritable and grumpy. And that means your baby will likely be more irritable too. It’s not an ideal result for your or your delicious baby.

So that’s three very major reasons not to choose soy milk for babies. Now ask yourself, are soy based formulas safe? In our opinion the answer is no.
